Ferguson: Wary of Chelsea

Fergie labels Blues a threat March 26 2008

Sir Alex Ferguson has highlighted Chelsea as the biggest threat to Manchester United successfully defending their Premier League title.

The Blues extended their unbeaten run to 14 games with a vital 2-1 victory over Arsenal on Sunday which saw them slide into second place in the standings.

There are just five-points separating the Red Devils and Avram Grants' men and with Fergie's charges still needing to make the daunting trip to Stamford Bridge, the Scot believes the power lies with the London outfit.

He said: "I think Chelsea hold the key. We've still got to go to Stamford Bridge where they've got a formidable home record.

"We have established a good lead but we're not taking anything for granted, we have to carry on playing the way we have been.

"As I've said all along, the team who shows real consistency between now and the end of the season will win the league."

But the most successful manager in English football history admits that no matter what happens at the end of the season, he is proud of the way his players have performed thus far in the campaign.

"We've developed as a team this season and I think you saw that maturity reach its peak with our win over Liverpool," he said.

"We've retained the consistency of last season, we're challenging for the league again and we're in the quarter-finals of the European Cup."
