Megson: No unrest among players

Megson: No unrest among players March 27 2008

Gary Megson has denied suggestions that Bolton's fight against relegation from the Premier League is being undermined by unrest among his own players.

Midfielder Ivan Campo stormed down the tunnel and did not hide his anger towards Megson after being substituted during last weekend's goalless draw against Manchester City.

The show of petulance followed defender Abdoulaye Meite's refusal to play in the second half of the Trotters' 2-0 defeat against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

And with senior players having brought Senegal striker El-Hadji Diouf's commitment into question, Megson has been forced to fight one fire after another as the club's predicament has worsened.

Wanderers lie in the relegation zone having taken one point from their last six outings ahead of the visit of Arsenal on Saturday.

However, Megson said: "There is no dissent - it's a terrific dressing room with a great squad of players.

"Something happened at Manchester United that I've never seen before and wouldn't want to see again. Abdoulaye Meite just said he didn't want to go out for the second half.

"I was surprised and disappointed but we've dealt with it as a club. The latest one was Ivan getting a bit stroppy when he was brought off, but he's done that a couple of times.

"What disappointed me more was that after the City game I wasn't talking about how well we had played but we ended up talking about Ivan and his walk up the tunnel.

"Once you start focusing on things that don't particularly matter then you've got a huge problem. You start looking for things that aren't there.

"There is a perception from outside the club as to what is going on in the inside - but it's just not there. The players are fine."

Meite, meanwhile, has turned down a loan move to Championship promotion-chasers Ipswich but he would appear to have no future at the Reebok Stadium.

Campo - who played a key role in Bolton's success under Sam Allardyce and remains a cult figure at the club - will at least be involved against Arsene Wenger's faltering side this weekend.

However, Megson admitted there will be increased pressure on the 34-year-old midfielder to perform after his antics last weekend.

"When you do what Ivan did and you play the week after, then you've really got to perform. Ivan will be involved because there is no problem between myself and Ivan or Ivan and anyone else at this football club.

"He's a great lad, he's got a terrific personality but he gets frustrated when he gets brought off the field or he's not selected - as do a lot of senior pros.

"He was upset that he had been brought off the field, but accepted that he reacted in the wrong way."
