Manchester United legend Bryan Robson would be welcomed back to Old Trafford with open arms should he accept an ambassadorial role with the club.
A United spokesperson on Tuesday confirmed "there's no deal as yet", but added: "Obviously Bryan is a key figure in our past.
"If he wished to take on such a role, then we would be delighted to see him return to the club."
There is no timescale to any appointment of the 51-year-old former England captain who enjoyed his best playing years with the Red Devils, with the position being considered similar to that of Sir Bobby Charlton.
It is understood Robson is considering the post after failing to make his desired impact in management.
His reputation as a manager, already hit by disappointing spells at West Brom and Bradford, suffered further as he was sacked by Sheffield United last month.
