McCarthy: New deal

McCarthy pens new Rovers deal April 25 2008

Blackburn striker Benni McCarthy has signed a new three-year contract at Ewood Park.

The South Africa international, who has found the net on 11 occasions this season, has now committed his future to the club until the summer of 2011.

McCarthy, the club's top scorer after joining from Portuguese giants FC Porto last term, had been in negotiations with the Lancashire outfit for a number of weeks.

Rovers manager Mark Hughes said: "I think it's actually done now which is good news for us."

The 30-year-old scored 24 goals in an outstanding first campaign at Ewood Park last year.

Although he has not replicated that form this season, often playing second fiddle to new star man Roque Santa Cruz, McCarthy has remained an important member of Hughes' side.

His new deal will take him beyond the 2010 World Cup, in which the forward will hope to play a role in his homeland.

Blackburn and McCarthy had to wait for his work permit to be renewed to complete the deal, but that proved a formality.
