Blackburn manager Mark Hughes believes another Intertoto Cup campaign can help the development of his side.
Rovers have put themselves forward for the summer competition once again, having made it through to the UEFA Cup via that route this season.
Currently in eighth place in the Barclays Premier League, two points and two places away from Aston Villa who occupy the final European place, Hughes' men are well positioned to qualify through league standing.
"I think we all accept that the Intertoto benefited us," Hughes told the club's official website.
"Certainly with the start that we had this season, we always felt that having played competitive games in pre-season helped us.
"We want to be in Europe again, ideally we would like to get a UEFA Cup place from a league position, be it fourth, fifth or sixth.
"So if we can do that then obviously the Intertoto doesn't come the equation.
"We always aspire to have European football every year now and the Intertoto Cup is a good route in."
Blackburn won six and drew four of their opening 11 league fixtures this season after sealing their UEFA spot.
