Fabregas: We can still win title

Fabregas: We can still win title April 29 2008

Cesc Fabregas still believes Arsenal could snatch the Premier League title after their 6-2 victory over relegated Derby.

The result took the Gunners to within four points of Chelsea and Manchester United with two games remaining.

Fabregas told Setanta Sports: "Nothing is impossible. We have to win the last two games and then we'll see. We are not the favourites, but you never know."

The Rams were well in contention in the first half but Arsene Wenger's side ran away with it after half-time, with substitute Emmanuel Adebayor grabbing a hat-trick.

Fabregas said: "They started very strong and put us under a lot of pressure. After we made it 1-3 we relaxed a bit but they made it 2-3 and we knew we had to push.

"But fortunately we responded straight away and Theo (Walcott) scored a great goal."

The Spanish midfielder also paid tribute to Adebayor, adding: "He makes a difference every time he plays, he's a striker who can do everything. We should feel fortunate to have him."

Adebayor, who also scored a treble in the home game against County earlier in the season, was keen to praise his team-mates for their service.

"It was an important game for us and we want to finish as strongly as possible," The Togo ace said.

"Every time I have a good ball to finish. I'm very happy but the most important thing is for the team to win."Wenger was more cautious than Fabregas, insisting his charges "need a miracle" to claim the title.

"Probable, no. Possible, yes," the Arsenal manager told Setanta Sports.

"But we would need a miracle. We've set ourselves an 83-point target. We can get to 80 against Everton so let's do it."

Wenger was largely happy with the performance of his young team but admitted Derby again showed up weaknesses.

"It was a typical performance from us - mobile, clean technically and we were always dangerous but as well we had moments where we lacked concentration and we were punished.

"Derby gave everything but the longer the game lasted the more you could see we could score goals. They didn't look a team who are down and had no confidence.

"They had a real go and were dangerous at set-pieces. But in midfield we were dominant and the young players did very well."

The French tactician again defended his team's record this term despite their likely lack of silverware and insisted the future is bright.

"I love this team and I think they have a great future."Derby manager Paul Jewell promised "major surgery" in the summer and insisted the "mentality" of the club has to change.

It was the sixth time this season the Rams have conceded six goals, and Jewell admitted it was a familiar story at Pride Park.

He told Setanta Sports: "In the first half we were terrific but it took so much out of us.

"The second half you're thinking 'let's try to do same'. But the goals we gave away, and the opportunities Arsenal had, it could have been anything.

"We got it back to 3-2 and within a minute it was 4-2. We need the season to be over as soon as possible.

"We've already made moves behind the scenes so let's move on. We playing miles above our level, let's regroup and start again.

"The whole mentality of the club has to change. When adversity hits you you've got to roll your sleeves up and fight and we haven't got that.

"With the addition of a few quality players, and a few quality men, we're hoping to change that."
