David James saved a penalty before Darren Carter's own goal gifted Portsmouth a 1-0 win over Preston in the FA Cup fifth round at Deepdale.
Sulley Muntari went closest in the first half with a curling free-kick but Pompey will count themselves massively lucky to be in the quarter-finals after they survived a second-half onslaught.
It looked as though Preston would get the win they deserved just before the hour mark when Sylvain Distin brought down Billy Jones in the box but James guessed the right way to keep out Simon Whaley's disappointing spot-kick.
James made further saves to deny Carter and a superb curling effort from substitute Neil Mellor and then, deep into injury time, Preston hearts were broken when Carter volleyed into the roof of his own net as he attempted to clear a Portsmouth corner.
