Small bonus for Tykes' Cup heroics

Barnsley chairman Gordon Shepherd joked that he does not like to talk about bonuses as he is a Yorkshireman.

His pockets might be long, but the 64-year-old would find it hard to begrudge the £15,000 the Championship club's players earned for dumping holders Chelsea out of the FA Cup with Saturday's 1-0 win at Oakwell.

That's £15,000 to be divided amongst the heroes who caused another sensational shock to eclipse their fifth-round heroics over Liverpool at Anfield three weeks ago.

These are heady days for Shepherd and the Tykes, and they can now look forward to a trip to Wembley next month for their first semi-final since they won the famous old trophy in 1912.

"We were talking in the dressing room the other day and the lads were pulling my leg about bonuses," he said.

"So I said to them 'well, there's a tenner in it for you but there are conditions. We have to win 15-0'.

"When they said to me that was fine, I replied 'that's all very well, but you have to score 14 in the first half'.

"You see whenever the players ask me about a bonus, I just tell them I don't understand, that I'm a Yorkshireman."

Simon Davey's team might have comprised a Dutchman, a Brazilian, a Jamaican, a Hungarian, and the goalscoring hero in Nigerian Kayode Odejayi, but the victory was carved out of good old-fashioned Yorkshire grit.

Recognising that, Shepherd added: "After Liverpool I wondered how it could get any better, but this is quite remarkable.

"There was passion, passion, passion, commitment, no fear and a great deal of heart. The players just got stuck in and everything was there.

"We've proved the romance of the FA Cup is far from dead, and now I'm so looking forward to going to Wembley.

"It's going to be a fantastic event for everybody connected with Barnsley, and not just the club, but the town as well.

"It's wonderful to be chairman of a club that has not reached the semi-final since we won it in 1912, but then it's wonderful to be chairman of Barnsley Football Club anyway.

"I've been coming here since 1961 and I've seen a number of peaks and troughs, but this is just fantastic for everybody, the players, fans, management and all the staff. It's wonderful."
