Derby's relegation woe

Derby's relegation woe March 29 2008

The inevitable has finally happened and Derby have been relegated from the Premier League following their draw with Fulham and Birmingham's victory over Manchester City.

Critics of the hapless Rams have suggested they might be the worst team ever to have 'graced' the Premier League.

Here, we see if the statistics back up that claim.

LOWEST POINTS

With a woeful 11, Derby are on course to set a new benchmark for the fewest number of points mustered over a 38-game season where three points were awarded for a win.

Sunderland hold the current record after they collected just 15 on their way to relegation from the top flight in 2005-06.

That stands as a record for any division since it was decided to award three points for a victory, rather than two. Under the previous system, Loughborough and Doncaster both totalled eight points in the old Second Division, in 1899-1900 and 1904-05 respectively.

FEWEST WINS

When Kenny Miller's long-range effort at Pride Park proved enough to beat Newcastle on September 17, even the most pessimistic of Rams fans must have expected a few more wins to materialise over the course of the season.

Embarrassingly, that remains Derby's solitary victory, and they need at least two more to equal Sunderland's previous low of three, set two seasons ago.

If they fail to win again, County will stand alongside the Loughborough vintage of 108 years ago as the worst ever in any division.

MOST DEFEATS

With 23 defeats, Derby will have to lose every game to match Sunderland's total of 29 reverses from two years ago.

They have no chance, however, of getting anywhere near Doncaster's 34 defeats from 46 games in the Third Division of 1997-98.

GOALS SCORED

Derby are well on course to beat another Sunderland record. In 2002-03, the Black Cats notched just 21 times, but that seems like a veritable glut compared to County's paltry total of 16.

They have also scored 10 goals at Pride Park, the same as Manchester City's benchmark from last term for the fewest on home turf - a low for any division.

The picture is no more rosy in terms of goals scored away from home. With six so far, Derby are two behind Middlesbrough (1995/96), Southampton (1998/99) and Sheffield United (2006/07).

GOALS CONCEDED

Here, Derby can breathe easy.

Although the shipping of 67 goals is hardly anything to be proud of, the Rams are sure to finish well ahead of Swindon who conceded 100 in 1993-94.

The record for all divisions is held by Darwen, who had to pick the ball out of their net 141 times in the Second Division in 1898-99.

GOAL DIFFERENCE

Not a pretty sight.

With a difference of -51, County look certain to beat the record for a 38-game Premier League season which currently stands at -44 - set by Sunderland in 2002-03.

If the rest of the season goes according to form, they should even beat Ipswich's goal difference of -57 from 1994/95, set when they had 42 games to prove their ineptitude.
