Fabio Capello's England accomplished their mission against Switzerland on Wednesday. This is how the team rated.
DAVID JAMES - Apart from the visitors' goal he had little to do. Got away with slicing a kick in the first half. 6
WES BROWN - Poor clearance in the first half set up a long-range effort from Tranquillo Barnetta. 5
ASHLEY COLE - Nothing went right for him in the first half and there was little evidence of his trademark marauding runs forward. 5
RIO FERDINAND - Usual calmness in the heart of England's defence, would be harsh to blame him for the Swiss goal. 6
MATTHEW UPSON - Cleared a dangerous free-kick from nearly under his own crossbar and now offers Fabio Capello back-up. 6
GARETH BARRY - Quietly effective in front of the back four, breaking up play and passing neatly. 6
STEVEN GERRARD - Less effective when he was out wide on the left but still managed to surge forward and set up the second goal. 6
DAVID BENTLEY - Plenty of invention, silenced the supporters who jeered him on his debut. 7
JOE COLE - Appeared to enjoy his free role behind Rooney and set up the opener for Jenas. 7
JERMAINE JENAS - Opened his England account and could have added a second with a drive in the second half. Plenty of running. 7
WAYNE ROONEY - Only a goal would have capped off his tireless performance. Could sometimes do with more support. 8
SUBSTITUTES:
PETER CROUCH - Almost scored with a first-time volley and provided a useful outlet. 6
SHAUN WRIGHT-PHILLIPS - Got his goal and added genuine pace to England's midfield. 7
OWEN HARGREAVES - Tightened the midfield when brought on. 6
WAYNE BRIDGE - Not much for the Chelsea man to do. 6
ASHLEY YOUNG - Not enough time to get in the game. 5
