Trains plea to Rangers fans

Trains plea to Rangers fans May 11 2008

Transport police on Saturday issued a plea for Rangers fans travelling to the UEFA Cup final by train to behave responsibly.

Around 100,000 supporters of the Scottish club are set to flood Manchester for the showdown against Zenit St Petersburg on Wednesday.

Many will go by train, and a ban on alcohol on services from Glasgow and Edinburgh to Manchester and Preston will be in force on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Chief Inspector Alex McGuire, of the British Transport Police, said: "We want to ensure that passengers and rail staff can travel safely and without encountering anti-social behaviour.

"There will be high-profile, on-train patrols on all services to Manchester and our officers will be a highly visible presence at all the stations on the route."

And he added: "We will not tolerate anti-social behaviour of any kind on the trains or at stations.

"Please remember that not everyone on the train is travelling to see the UEFA Cup final in Manchester."
