The Sheffield-born striker and life-long Blades fan finished emphatically with an angled shot to send FA Cup semi-finalists Barnsley spinning closer to relegation trouble in the 77th minute.

The Tykes saw penalty claims waved away when Jon Macken went down under Chris Morgan's challenge.

Gary Speed was close to making the breakthrough when his drive cannoned back off the woodwork but Sharp struck the winner when he lashed a low shot into the bottom corner to the delight of the 6,000 travelling away fans.
