Seyi Olofinjana earned Wolves a 1-0 win over Plymouth Argyle - but the victory was not enough as they agonisingly missed out on the play-offs.
The Nigerian raced through after 87 minutes to clip coolly over Luke McCormick in the Argyle goal but Crystal Palace's win over Burnley and Watford's point at Blackpool meant they were edged out of the top six on goal difference.
Freddy Eastwood was handed a chance to be the hero with 25 minutes remaining as a replacement for Andy Keogh but the Wales international dragged his one and only chance wide of the post.
Frustratingly, they could easily have scored the extra two goals required with Michael Kightly and Keogh particularly culpable for spurning golden opportunities on what proved to be a desperately disappointing end to the season for Mick McCarthy's side, who finished in seventh position.
