Peter Whittingham's kept his cool to hand Cardiff all three points as Bristol City's promotion push stalled in a 2-1 defeat at Ninian Park.
The Bluebirds dug deep to snatch a well-deserved victory after Dele Adebola had cancelled out Roger Johnson's headed opener a minute before the break.
Cardiff had been by far the more threatening early on as Glenn Loovens blasted over the crossbar and Johnson's shot flew wide.
The opener came when Johnson met Whittingham's inswinging free-kick just before the break. But Adebola headed home an equaliser against the run of play, before Jamie McAllister lashed wide as the visitors sensed victory.
But the winner came for the hosts when Marvin Elliott tangled with Stephen McPhail and Whittingham scored at the second attempt after City goalkeeper Adriano Basso blocked his penalty.
