Kenwyne Jones marked his home debut with a goal and an assist as Sunderland claimed a 2-1 victory over Reading at the Stadium of Light.
The Black Cats took the lead in the 29th minute when £6million signing Jones fired past Marcus Hahnemann and into the bottom corner.
Jones sent a 41st-minute header over the bar with the goal at his mercy after Hahnemann had earlier made a fine save to deny midfielder Grant Leadbitter.
But the hosts doubled their lead two minutes into the restart when Ross Wallace was on hand to steer home Jones' cross after the Trinidad & Tobago hitman showed fine close control.
And Wallace had a great chance to make it 3-0 when Hahnemann fumbled Jones' right-wing cross but the Scotsman's effort was snuffed out by Graeme Murty.
Dave Kitson pulled one back for the Royals late on but it was too little too late.
