Gary Speed, Nicolas Anelka and Daniel Braaten scored as Bolton beat Reading 3-0 at the Reebok Stadium to grab their first points of the season.
The hosts started brightly, with Ulises De la Cruz and Andre Bikey pulling off crucial challenges to deny Gavin McCann and Anelka early on.
Marcus Hahnemann kept out another Anelka effort soon after but he could not keep out Speed's firm header that put the Trotters in front on 31 minutes.
McCann almost extended their lead after the interval as the Sammy Lee's troops grew in confidence, although De la Cruz had a chance to equalise for the Royals soon after.
However, Anelka made it 2-0 in the 55th minute when he evaded De la Cruz to score his third goal in four games.
And Braaten capped a fine performance by Wanderers, finishing clinically in stoppage time after stepping off the bench.
