Andy Johnson will be hoping for better luck with England next week after spurning a golden late chance for Everton in a 1-0 defeat at Reading.
With a fairly uneventful opening period looking as if it was heading towards a goalless conclusion, the home side took the lead.
A long throw by Ulises De la Cruz from the right bounced over Kevin Doyle and through to Stephen Hunt, six yards out.
The Royals midfielder took one touch, before slotting the ball past Tim Howard.
The visitors started the second half strongly with Johnson chipping over the bar, while substitute Steven Pienaar forced Marcus Hahnemann into a fine save at his near post.
David Moyes' men were unfortunate not to draw level with six minutes to go when James McFadden's curling effort came back off the bar and Johnson's scrambled follow-up effort hit the post.
