Everton 3 Newcastle 1 May 11 2008

Everton clinched fifth place and UEFA Cup qualification as Ayegbeni Yakubu netted a brace in their 3-1 win over Newcastle United.

Everton went ahead on 28 minutes when Manuel Fernandes' free-kick was headed in by Yakubu.

On 34 minutes Yakubu had the ball in the net again with a close-range header but the effort was ruled out for offside.

But Newcastle levelled within 30 seconds of the restart.

Joseph Yobo, caught off balance by a swerving run by Charles N'Zogbia, sent the Newcastle forward flying and Michael Owen fired in the penalty.

But Everton were ahead again on 70 minutes when Fernandes' chip was flicked on by Steven Taylor and Joleon Lescott rolled the ball into the far corner.

Everton got their third when Leon Osman was taken out by Taylor on 82 minutes and Yakubu drilled home his 21st goal of the season from the spot.
