Fulham fans danced with delight after Danny Murphy's header 14 minutes from time kept them in the Premier League with a 1-0 win at Portsmouth.
The Cottagers made a bright start with Jimmy Bullard's cross causing panic and then Simon Davies' shot brushing off the post.
Clint Dempsey then saw penalty claims waved away, while Niko Kranjcar fired over the bar at the other end.
Kanu and John Utaka then spurned good openings for the hosts, before Jermain Defoe blazed a golden opportunity over the bar.
Kranjcar and Defoe saw efforts saved by Kasey Keller as the second half got underway, while the Croatian midfielder was narrowly off target with a piledriver.
But with 14 minutes left, Roy Hodgson's side made the all-important breakthrough when Bullard picked out Murphy and his towering header beat Jamie Ashdown to complete one of the greatest top-flight escapes.
