Portsmouth 4 Birmingham 2 March 12 2008

Two goals from Jermain Defoe helped FA Cup semi-finalists Portsmouth towards a 4-2 home win over Birmingham in the Premier League on Wednesday.

Plucky Birmingham hit back from a stunning two-goal blow by Jermain Defoe early on and were level by half- time.

Defoe scored from the spot (6) after David Murphy had handled Milan Baros' cross, and was on target again three minutes later Maik Taylor had parried shots from Sulley Muntari and then Baros.

However, Fabrice Muamba (10) quickly stabbed in a goal to reduce the deficit and Sebastian Larsson (40) had Blues level with a stunning free-kick.

But Alex McLeish's men had no answer when big Icelander Hermann Hreidarsson poked his third goal of the season on 49 minutes - before substitute Kanu finished the visitors off in stoppage-time.

Pompey return to seventh spot, while Blues stay 17th.
