Aston Villa 4 Newcastle 1 February 09 2008

John Carew bagged a hat-trick as Aston Villa came from a goal down at half-time to thrash Newcastle 4-1 at Villa Park on Saturday afternoon.

The visitors took the lead in the fourth minute when James Milner's cross found Michael Owen at the near post and the England striker stooped to nod home.

Villa struggled in the final third so Martin O'Neill turned to Craig Gardner and Marlon Harewood at the break - a move which paid dividends as the hosts scored twice in the space of three minutes.

Wilfred Bouma's effort from 20 yards beat Shay Given after the Magpies goalkeeper slipped, and the game was turned on its head when Ashley Young's corner found the head of Carew who flicked home.

Carew grabbed his second after comical defending from Nicky Butt and completed his hat-trick with a minute to go from the spot after Stephen Carr handled in the area.
