Everton were left bitterly frustrated after only drawing 0-0 at Blackburn, having seen a late Andy Johnson strike controversially disallowed.

The opening period at Ewood Park saw precious few genuine goalscoring opportunities, but just 18 seconds after the restart, David Bentley forced Tim Howard into his first save of note.

Brad Friedel saved well from Manuel Fernandes and then the same player saw his 25-yard free-kick beat the Rovers goalkeeper but bounce agonisingly back off an upright on 62 minutes.

The Toffees continued to look dangerous and should have claimed victory on 85 minutes when substitute James Vaughan broke clear, beat Friedel to the ball and unselfishly fed the supporting Johnson.

He produced a calm finish into Freidel's empty net but a controversial raised flag from a referee's assistant put paid to his celebrations.
