Bolton began the most testing period of their Premier League season so far with a late defeat at home to Lancashire rivals Blackburn.
A scrappy opening period was lit up by a moment of sheer brilliance from Kevin Nolan in the 43rd minute as Wanderers took the lead.
Friedel cleared a Bolton corner only for Joey O'Brien to return the ball to the far post where Nolan twisted his body to send a stunning looping volley into the far corner.
Rovers equalised in the 53rd minute when David Bentley's corner was missed by Jussi Jaaskelainen and Christopher Samba's downward header bounced over Danny Guthrie on the line.
Rovers pushed for the winner and got it in the 90th minute when Jason Roberts muscled his way through before seeing his shot from 18 yards take a slight deflection off Joey O'Brien to beat Jaaskelainen.
