Middlesbrough 1 Liverpool 1 January 12 2008

Fernando Torres came to Liverpool's rescue as he struck a superb equaliser to earn a 1-1 draw at Middlesbrough on Saturday.

Boro took the lead through George Boateng after 26 minutes. The Dutchman turned cleverly away from Steven Gerrard in the middle of the field and fed the ball out to Stewart Downing, who delivered a dangerous cross to the far post.

Gary O'Neil climbed above Alvaro Arbeloa to head the ball back across goal, and Sunli Tuncay did the same again for Boateng, who had carried on his run beyond Sami Hyypia, and he fired into the empty net.

Downing hit the post on 67 minutes, but soon after Torres had conjured up a memorable equaliser.

The Spaniard unleashed a fierce right-footed drive from 20 yards which went in off the right-hand post for his 11th league goal of the season and 17th in all competitions.
