England rivals Jermain Defoe and Michael Owen missed chances as Portsmouth and Newcastle fought out a 0-0 draw at Fratton Park.
A dour first-period came to life in the final five minutes of the half when Mark Viduka volleyed into the ground and into the arms of David James, while Steven Taylor sent his acrobatic volley wide of the target.
Pompey had claims for a penalty waved away when the ball struck Taylor's arm in the United box before the game opened up in the second period.
Jermain Defoe and Michael Owen both failed to convert close-range volleys while both keepers were forced into diving saves, James to keep out Geremi's drive before Harper had turn-away Defoe's deflected shot.
The stalemate leaves Pompey four points off fifth-placed Everton while Newcastle remain 12th above north east rivals Middlesbrough and Sunderland.
