Wigan dropped into the Premiership bottom three as Mark Viduka earned Middlesbrough a 1-0 win at the JJB Stadium and West Ham beat Bolton.

The Latics have not been in the relegation zone all season, but their defeat coupled with the Hammers 3-1 win over the Trotters, means they are three points off safety with a game to save themselves.

Paul Jewell's side started brightly but it was Boro who snatched the lead after 29 minutes when Viduka got on the end of Stewart Downing's free-kick to poke home unmarked from six yards.

Mike Pollit denied Downing from making it 2-0 before the England winger missed another chance at the start of the second half, flashing wide with only Pollit to beat.

Julius Aghahowa and Antonio Valencia had half chances for the Lancashire club late on but they must now win at Sheffield United next week and hope the Irons lose at Manchester United.
