Steven Gerrard bagged a brace to send Liverpool back above Arsenal into third place with a 2-0 win over Middlesbrough.
The Gunners took third spot by beating Manchester City 24 hours earlier, but Gerrard struck with two goals in five minutes during the second half of Wednesday night's match at Anfield.
Gerrard opened the scoring on 58 minutes when Boudewijn Zenden's neat pass dropped into his path 25 yards out and he crashed the ball low past Mark Schwarzer.
Boro youngster Andrew Davies then conceded a penalty in the 64th minute when he pushed Peter Crouch as the big striker was preparing to head a Jermaine Pennant cross and Gerrard crashed home the spot-kick and the points were safe.
It means a win over Wigan at Anfield on Saturday will make sure of Champions League football next season.
