Kevin Keegan's Newcastle reign took another turn for the worse as Matt Derbyshire's last-minute goal earned Blackburn a 1-0 win at St James' Park.
The Magpies dominated the first half and should have gone ahead in the 35th minute when Michael Owen got onto the end of a Joey Barton pass and rounded Brad Friedel only to shoot wide from a narrowing angle.
Steve Harper had to pull off a fine save to keep out Andre Ooijer's six-yard volley on the stroke of half-time but the hosts continued to threaten at the start of the second half and it needed a good save from Friedel to keep out Owen's powerful header in the 56th minute.
The England striker missed his third good chance of the afternoon four minutes later after again being put clean through by Barton and Derbyshire made the Toon pay at the death with a well-hit shot over Harper.
