Michael Owen scored his first competitive goal for 20 months as Newcastle beat Barnsley 2-0 in round two of the Carling Cup at St James' Park.
The 27-year-old England international struck 12 minutes after the break, finding the net in a meaningful game for his club for the first time since December 17, 2005.
Sam Allardyce made seven changes to the team which fought out a 2-2 Premier League draw at Middlesbrough on Sunday and his side struggled to break down their Championship opponents.
Nolberto Solano and Charles N'Zogbia's long-range deflected efforts were as close as the Magpies came and it was left to Owen to finally break the deadlock when he stabbed home after 57 minutes.
And it was Owen's replacement Obafemi Martins who wrapped up the win with an acrobatic volley four minutes from time.
