The ghost of Jose Mourinho lingered over Old Trafford as Avram Grant's reign at Chelsea started with a defeat against Manchester United.
In 11 meetings with United, Mourinho lost only once. Grant now finds himself needing to go 10 undefeated to match that record as first Carlos Tevez, with his first goal for the Red Devils, then Louis Saha with a penalty, struck at the end of either half.
Their efforts allowed the Red Devils to take maximum advantage of Mikel Jon Obi's first-half dismissal for a studs-first challenge on Patrice Evra.
United took the lead on 45 when Ryan Giggs drilled over a cross with his left foot and Tevez stole in front of Petr Cech to head home.
United had to wait until 90 to make the game safe. Sub Louis Saha went down under minimal contact from Tal Ben Haim and drilled home the resulting penalty to make the score 2-0 to Manchester United.
