Cristiano Ronaldo was sent off for an apparent headbutt as Premier League champions Manchester United drew at Portsmouth on Wednesday.

United went in front after 15 minutes at Fratton Park. Nani made one of a series of left-wing forays and fed the ball into fellow full debutant Carlos Tevez - who turned and set it up perfectly for Paul Scholes to blast in from 15 yards.

But Benjani Mwaruwari's second goal in two games - a bullet header after 52 minutes - wrecked the Red Devils' hopes of victory.

And in a dramatic last few minutes, Ronaldo was dismissed for an incident with Pompey substitute Richard Hughes - just seconds after the home side's Sulley Muntari was also sent off for a second bookable offence.

Portuguese winger Ronaldo must now serve a three-match ban, starting with the derby away to City on Sunday.
