Shane Long and Dave Kitson earned Reading a crucial 2-0 win over Manchester City as they climbed out of the relegation zone.
City created the first chance when Vedran Corluka guided the ball over from five yards, while Benjani headed straight at Marcus Hahnemann.
The visitors then lost Richard Dunne to a badly-gashed shin, before Joe Hart kept out efforts from Long and Marek Matejovsky.
Sven-Goran Eriksson's side were denied a penalty when Michael Johnson fell under Ivar Ingimarsson's challenge.
Kevin Doyle hit the sidenetting as the second half got underway, while Andre Bikey saw his header pushed onto the bar.
But the Royals took the lead on 62 minutes when Doyle's left-wing cross picked out Long who drilled home from close range.
And the win was sealed in the 88th minute when Kitson evaded a couple of challenges and rolled the ball past Hart as Steve Coppell's men moved up to 13th place.
