Kasper Schmeichel saved a second-half Robin van Persie penalty but was beaten by Cesc Fabregas as Arsenal won 1-0 at home to Manchester City.

It was the first goal Schmeichel had conceded in City's stunning start to the season - and ruined his hopes of a record fourth consecutive clean sheet.

In the Gunners' goal, blunder specialist Jens Lehmann was replaced by Manuel Alumnia, who was tested by Elano's 18-yard shot early on.

Martin Petrov fired a shot wide, while at the other end Van Persie put a 25-yard shot over the bar before being inches away from converting Fabregas' cross.

The hosts were given a penalty on 70 minutes when Micah Richards fouled Alexander Hleb in the box - but Schmeichel saved Van Persie's spot-kick.

He tipped the Dutchman's shot over the bar but was beaten on 80 minutes, when Fabregas lashed into the roof of the net.
