Manchester City's Geovanni pickpocketed city rivals United to give Sven-Goran Eriksson's side the derby spoils at Eastlands.
United dominated the match, but could not find a goal - thanks largely to an outstanding performance from Micah Richards - and now trail City by seven points in the fledgling Premier League table.
Eriksson's men took the lead in his first derby as boss against the run of play through Geovanni's 31st-minute strike, which deflected in off Nemanja Vidic.
United dominated the second half but there was no way through despite seeing Vidic's header cannon off the crossbar and Carlos Tevez direct a last-minute header inches wide.
The result meant City temporarily go three points clear top of the table, while United are languishing 16th after picking up just two points from their opening three games.
