Chelsea coach Avram Grant chalked up his first win in the Premier League after Salomon Kalou hit the winner in a 1-0 success at Bolton.
Chelsea should have made a perfect start when Steve Sidwell turned quickly in the area and found Kalou, who had peeled away from his marker inside 60 seconds.
But he sent a weak header into the arms of goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen.
Chelsea had their chances early on.
Florent Malouda thumped a shot over the bar after being released by Kalou. Then Jaaskelainen was equal to Malouda's effort.
But Bolton were lively and Kevin Davies, Ivan Campo and Nicolas Anelka all forced Petr Cech into action.
But Kalo fired the winner into the corner after escaping from Abdoulaye Meite.
Bolton could have equalised in the second period but headers from El-Hadji Diouf and Stelios Giannakopoulos failed to hit the net.
