Frank Lampard scored his second goal in a week as Chelsea beat Portsmouth 1-0 at Stamford Bridge to move to the top of the Premier League.

The Blues almost took the lead in the first minute when Claudio Pizarro sent a low drive just wide of the post, while Florent Malouda fired into the side-netting nine minutes later.

Matt Taylor came close to giving Pompey a shock lead but his curling shot missed Petr Cech's far post by a matter of inches

However, it was the hosts who went ahead themselves in the 31st minute when Lampard latched onto Didier Drogba's flick-on and fired low under David James.

The south coast club started to take control after the interval and Nwankwo Kanu had a great chance to equalise in the 52nd minute, only to fire over from eight yards.

Gary O'Neil and Hermann Hreidarsson missed further chances but Jose Mourinho's men held on for the win.
