Liverpool were unable to find a way past Birmingham as they were forced to settle for a second consecutive 0-0 Premier League draw.
A resolute Blues side frustrated the Reds in the first half and chances were rare, with Dirk Kuyt failing to trouble Maik Taylor as he headed wide from a Steven Gerrard cross.
Jermaine Pennant produced a 25-yard effort which was turned over the bar by Taylor, but City's system was disrupted by what looked a bad injury to Borja Oubina on his full debut.
It was a similar story after the break as Jamie Carragher saw an 18-yard shot deflected just over and Gerrard stabbed in a near-post effort that Mehdi Nafti cleared off the line.
Rafael Benitez will surely be criticised after leaving Fernando Torres on the bench again, but his arrival on the hour could not produce a goal as Steve Bruce's men held on.
