Shaun Maloney grabbed a dramatic last-gasp 2-1 win over 10-man Fulham, who had Chris Baird sent off and saw Zat Knight score an own goal.

The Cottagers were chasing their first Premier League away win in 11 months and started well when Clint Dempsey's left-footed drive went in off the underside of the crossbar on six minutes.

Villa responded with an overhead kick from Stiliyan Petrov and further efforts from Ashley Young and John Carew, who hit the post with a header.

Lawrie Sanchez's side had a penalty claim turned down on 31 minutes, when Diomansy Kamara's shot was handled by Martin Laursen.

And the equaliser came on 51 minutes, when Young's cross was turned into his own net by Knight.

Kamara hit the post but the visitors were reduced to 10 men when Baird got a second booking on 70 minutes.

And the dismissal proved crucial as Maloney pounced in stoppage time to bag all three points for Martin O'Neill's men.
