Reading's relegation fears were lifted somewhat when they edged out Derby in a tight contest at the Madejski Stadium.

After a dreary start, Andy Griffin curled an effort wide and Kenny Miller failed to hit the target for the Rams, while the Royals saw two penalty appeals rejected - both for handballs.

But the entertainment factor improved after the interval with Matt Oakley narrowly failing to find the target with a swerving 25-yard volley.

And just as Derby were beginning to exert a bit of pressure, Reading went up the other end and opened the scoring when Doyle steered an excellent header into the corner of Stephen Bywater's net after Graeme Murty's cross had been flicked on by the Rams' Steve Howard.

The Rams threw on three subs to try and rescue a point but the nearest they came as when Rob Earnshaw curled wide.
