Derby 1 Newcastle 0 September 17 2007

Debutant Kenny Miller's stunning 30-yard volley handed Derby their first Premier League win of the season with a 1-0 success over Newcastle.

The hosts started well with Steve Howard and Tyrone Mears missing good chances before David Rozenhal fired wide of a gaping goal from 15 yards after Michael Owen's cutback.

But it was Derby who broke the deadlock when Miller hit a loose ball from fully 30 yards and it swerved wide of Steve Harper into the top corner.

Newcastle replaced the ineffective Owen with Obafemi Martins after the break but the Magpies lacked a cutting edge and it was Derby who looked the more likely scorers.

A quick break saw Stephen Pearson feed Gary Teale and his pinpoint cross was headed wide by Howard.

But it mattered little as Derby held on to climb above Bolton, with Newcastle dropping to 10th.
