Manchester City broke a 780-minute Premier League scoring drought at Eastlands as they beat Derby County on Wednesday night.

Michael Johnson's well-taken winner after 43 minutes was City's first league goal on home soil since New Year's Day.

The 19-year-old crashed home impressively just before half-time, extending Sven Goran Eriksson's 100% start to life as Blues boss and ensuring they will head into Sunday's Manchester derby above United in the table.

The goal came shortly before the break. After shrugging off three would-be tacklers before laying off a pass to Stephen Ireland, Johnson then continued his surge, collected the return ball and effectively toe-punted a shot past Stephen Bywater.

City keeper Kasper Schmeichel had earlier been forced to race off his line to deny Stephen Pearson in Derby's best attack.
