Andrew Johnson and Mikel Arteta netted as Everton drew 2-2 with Fiorentina on aggregate but went out of the UEFA Cup 4-2 on penalites.
Everton started brightly and made the breakthrough on 16 when Steven Pienaar crossed from the left. Keeper Sebastien Frey was distracted by the presence of Ayegbeni Yakubu and the ball broke to Johnson, who bundled home from close range.
Arteta levelled on aggregate on 66 with a stunning 25-yard strike.
Fiorentina sub Giampaolo Pazzini's header was pushed over by Tim Howard on 76 before Yakubu headed over and wide late on.
Fiorentina almost went ahead in extra-time but Pazzini's effort went wide.
Yakubu blasted wide on 103 and the tie went to penalties.
But there was heartache for Everton as they lost 4-2 in the shoot-out with Yakubu and Phil Jagielka failing to convert their efforts.
