Everton had no answer to two pedigree second-half goals as they went down 2-0 at Fiorentina in the first leg of their UEFA Cup last-16 tie.
After a first half in which the Toffees were off the pace - and doubtless relieved to still be level - Zdravko Kuzmanovic and then Riccardo Montolivo each produced a memorable finishes to confirm the Italians' superiority.
It was harsh on Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard, who had come to his team's rescue with a succession of outstanding saves - but otherwise the Merseysiders got their just deserts.
Veteran striker Christian Vieri came closest to scoring before the break with a snapshot from inside the box which brought a fine reaction save from Howard.
But after the break, Kuzmanovic's well-struck 20-yard shot put the hosts ahead and then soon after, Montolivo scored with a first-time volley.
